【摘要】:TheSCCWmaybepresentintheworkplaceatmospherewherethesematerialsaremanufactured,processed,transported,orused.ThistestmethodcanbeusedtomonitorairborneconcentrationsofSCCWfibersintheseenvironments.Itmaybeemployedaspartofapersonalorareamonitoringstrategy.Thistestmethodisbasedonmorphologyandelementalcomposition.TheanalysistechniquehastheabilitytoidentifySCCW.Note18212;ThistestmethodassumesthattheanalystisfamiliarwiththeoperationofSEM/EDSinstrumentationandtheinterpretationofdataobtainedusingthesetechniques.Thistestmethodisnotappropriateformeasurementoffiberswithdiametersx2264;0.10to0.25x03BC;mduetovisibilitylimitationsassociatedwithSEM.TheTEMmethodmaybeusedtoprovideadditionalsizeinformationofSCCWifneeded(seePracticeD6058foradditionalinformationontheuseofthistestmethod).Resultsfromtheuseofthistestmethodshallbereportedalongwith95%confidencelimitsforthesamplesbeingstudied.Individuallaboratoriesshalldeterminetheirintralaboratorycoefficientofvariationanduseitforreporting95%confidencelimits(1,3,4).1.1Thistestmethodcoversthesamplingmethodsandanalysistechniquesusedtoassesstheairborneconcentrationandsizedistributionofsingle-crystalceramicwhiskers(SCCW),suchassiliconcarbideandsiliconnitride,whichmayoccurinandaroundtheworkplacewherethesematerialsaremanufactured,processed,transported,orused.Thistestmethodisbasedonthecollectionoffibersbyfiltrationofaknownquantityofairthroughafilter.Thefilterissubsequentlyevaluatedwithascanningelectronmicroscope(SEM)forthenumberoffibersmeetingappropriatelyselectedmorphologicalandcompositionalcriteria.ThistestmethodhastheabilitytodistinguishamongmanydifferenttypesoffibersbasedonenergydispersiveX-rayspectroscopy(EDS)analysis.Thistestmethodmaybeappropriateforotherman-mademineralfibers(MMMF).1.2Thistestmethodisapplicabletothequantitationoffibersonacollectionfilterthataregreaterthan5minlength,lessthan3minwidth,andhaveanaspectratioequaltoorgreaterthan5:1.Thedataaredirectlyconvertibletoastatementofconcentrationperunitvolumeofairsampled.ThistestmethodislimitedbythediameterofthefibersvisiblebySEM(typicallygreaterthan0.10to0.25minwidthasdeterminedin12.1.5)andtheamountofcoincidentinterferenceparticles.1.3Amoredefinitiveanalysismaybenecessarytoconfirmthepresenceoffiberswithdiameters0.10to0.25minwidth.Forthispurpose,atransmissionelectronmicroscope(TEM)isappropriate.TheuseoftheTEMmethodfortheidentificationandsizemeasurementofSCCWisdescribedinPracticeD6058andTestMethodD6056.1.4ThevaluesstatedinSIunitsaretoberegardedasthestandard.Thevaluesgiveninparenthesesareforinformationonly.Thisstandarddoesnotpurporttoaddressallofthesafetyconcerns,ifany,associatedwithitsuse.Itistheresponsibilityoftheuserofthisstandardtoestablishappropriatesafetyandhealthpracticesanddeterminetheapplicabilityofregulatorylimitationspriortouse.
